Artificial Intelligence: a Brain on a Chip

Artificial Intelligence. “Come away O human child to the waters and the wild with a fairy hand in hand for the world's more full of weeping than you can understand”. It was the famous answer of Dr. Know from the 2001 movie AI when the boy robot asked where the blue fairy can be found.

Surely most of us have seen or at least know the movie but how wide really is our knowledge concerning Artificial Intelligence? Or do we really understand the meaning of it beyond the story from that 2001 film?

The notion of creating today’s field of science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), began around the mid century. But it was in 1956 that AI had become a world renowned discipline.

It was during the Darthmouth conference at then Darthmouth College in New Hampshire that John McCarthy and his colleagues proposed the new advancement in science.

As McCarthy has said in the conference,

“An attempt will be made to find how to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves.”

Since the proposal, the rest has became history.

To make machines think like humans can be the most impossible thing to do. However, a huge imprint was created in the field of A. I. research if we were to examine the field of study today.

Before, scientists were just trying to figure out if the thoughts they hypothesized can be true; but little did they know that the attempt they were trying to achieve became one of the forerunners of the ever so advanced technology we have now.

AI has become a part of our everyday life, or rather, you should at least know that by now. Inventions emerged from all the corners of the world. Cell phones, gaming gadgets, computers, and robotic technologies to name a few have been the living proof of how a small attempt to create AI changed the way of our very lives. As of now, AI has become a vast knowledge of science and is still exponentially growing.

Things that were unimaginable before are becoming real now. We can even talk to machines nowadays thinking that was an absurd idea before.

Since its inception AI has been a part of the Medical, Agricultural, Astronomic, and even Food science fields to name a few. AI machines make the job easier and finish, with 100% accuracy. In addition, one notable characteristic about AI advancement is its consistency.

For us humans, being consistent is really a hard thing to do, and AI equipment and machines are to fill in that job. Machines that can comprehend is really an amazing feat but all these innovations would be nothing without man’s creative mind fueling the development of this field.
